Actual 'external
recognition' portions of e-forms in recent successful promotions to full
professor Requirements
for promotion from associate to full professor are: (a) Ongoing
excellence in a significant program of education (and/or administration, if
you are a CE) and clinical activity [if you are a clinician] and/or
administration (b)
Significant progress beyond that justifying promotion to associate professor (c) External
recognition as being among the leading figures in your field, discipline, or
specialty. [Please
also view the companion page,
in which three recent departmental chairs present their advice]. Many
faculty seeking promotion to this rank (and their mentors) continue to be
uncertain about what level of external recognition is sufficient for
promotion. COAP addresses this
issue in two ways, first by considering the reports from external
references. These are
confidential and cannot be posted here.
The second way is by scrutinizing invitations to speak and serve
outside this institution. To
illustrate the kinds and quantity of activity that may suffice, links are
provided below to the candidate's portion of e-forms submitted as part of
actual recent successful promotions cases. While these postings may be helpful in exemplifying the
level of achievement that is necessary, please read the following disclaimer
carefully: Disclaimer: The following information is drawn from materials prepared
by candidates for promotion to full professor. It is intended to illustrate activities and materials that
might support promotion. In
using these materials, please note the following: *The
Provost (and, in some cases, the President) are the University officers
authorized to approve promotions.
All levels of review below these officers are advisory. *Only
Departments are empowered to propose promotions, and the Divisional Dean is
charged with transmitting such proposals to the Provost or returning them to
the Department. *The judgment of the Department, Dean, and
Provost will therefore be critical to assessing qualification for promotion. *Materials
considered by the Department, Dean, and Provost will also (and always)
include confidential evaluations obtained from outside the University. Materials considered by the Provost
will include the confidential evaluations of the Dean and Department, and those
considered by the Dean will include the confidential evaluations of the
Department. *Thus,
the following materials are ONLY PART of a complete proposal for promotion,
whereas promotion is based on the ENTIRE proposal. Therefore, it should not be assumed that a record
comparable to that below will necessarily result in promotion, or that a
record not comparable to that below will fail to result in promotion. The Departmental Chair is likely to
be the best source of advice as to whether promotion is feasible and, when it
is not, what additional activity may result in qualification for promotion. *This
document has been prepared as a tool for use by associate professors in the
Division of the Biological Sciences.
Other individuals who may find it informative are Department Chairmen,
Section Heads, Committee Chairmen, senior faculty and potential
recruits. Its intent is to help
guide individuals and their departments as they think about promotion to
Professor. This document is not
intended to list the elements that every promotion proposal will be expected
to address. The following
information is presented for information purposes only and is not intended to
create any contract or agreement, and its contents are subject to addition,
deletion, and change without prior notice. FAQ: Q: I have
a better record of external recognition than many of those below. Why aren't I being promoted? A: First,
promotion proposals can come only from departments and not this office; ask
your chair why. Second, remember
that promotion decisions are based on multiple kinds of evidence, of which
'record of external recognition' is only one. Q: I am
'stuck in a rut' and can't seem to get the external recognition I need. What can I do about this? A: First,
you may volunteer – to run for office in professional societies, to
serve as a reviewer or an editor, to serve on a study section, to organize a
meeting or component of a meeting, to speak outside the institution,
etc. If you are uneasy about
volunteering yourself, as a colleague, mentor, or your chair to recommend
you. Second, attend national
meetings of your relevant professional society and network. Third, ask your chair, section chief,
and/or mentor(s) for advice. Q: I am
doing a very good job here. Why
isn't that enough for promotion? A: Doing
a good job here is necessary for promotion to full professor, but not
sufficient. Promotion to full
professor requires that you be among the leading figures in your area, which
means you need to be known by the other leading figures in your area. Q: Why
are ONLY the following posted? A: The
information is only posted when it is readily available from e-forms, and
eforms have been in use only since late 2004. Also, materials are posted only when permission of the
promoted faculty member has been granted. Q: What
are the requirements for regional, national, and international recognition? A: We no
longer use this terminology.
Some fields are largely restricted to this country; in them,
'international recognition' would be meaningless. A better guideline would be "comparable to the
following": Baroody, Fuad
