LAY SUMMARY:

Dr. Patrick Murray is trained and board-certified in Nephrology, Critical Care Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology, disciplines he uses fluently in his faculty work.  His main role is as a Critical Care Nephrologist.  This involves the care of acutely ill patients who develop kidney disease (now termed acute kidney injury or AKI); unfortunately, this is a large percentage, reflecting the relative sensitivity of the kidneys in acute illnesses.  His involvement in patients with AKI includes his being a clinician, educator, administrator, and investigator, for which he has an international reputation.  In addition, he has a major educational and administrative role in other areas, including through service as Director of the Nephrology Fellowship Program and Co-Director of the Clinical Pathophysiology & Therapeutics Course (CPP&T).  His excellence in teaching is well-known in our institution, including through student evaluations and awards, his being sought after to teach and lead courses, and his ability to attract trainees into our fellowship program.  Dr. Murray has also developed a reputation as an outstanding educator at an international level, with a soon-to-be published textbook on Critical Care Nephrology and an invited monograph on AKI for the American Society of NephrologyÕs Nephrology Self-Assessment Program (NephSAP), considered to reflect the state-of-the-art by trainees and practicing nephrologists and the main study reference for NephrologyÕs board exam.
