Directions
to the ANATOMY BUILDING
1027 East 57th Street
at The University of Chicago
[This
will also serve as directions to the Quadrangle Club (1155 E. 57th Street, 1/2
block east of Anatomy Building)]
Directions if you are driving:
The University of Chicago campus may be reached from Lake Shore Drive,
I-90/94 (Dan Ryan Expressway), I-90 (Chicago Skyway), or Stony Island Avenue.
From O'Hare (I-190) and north (I-294, I-94), west (I-290), and southwest
(via I-55) of the city:
Follow signs to downtown Chicago or Chicago Loop.
From I-90/94: Exit onto I-55 North
(to Lakeshore Drive)
From I-290: Get on 90/94
"eastbound" (to Indiana, not to Wisconsin) and exit onto I-55 North
(to Lakeshore Drive)
From I-55 North, exit towards the
right onto Lake Shore Drive southbound. [I-55 terminates at Lake Shore Drive.
The exit preceding this is for Martin Luther King Drive.]
From southbound Lake Shore Drive:
(Downtown, Lincoln Park, North Shore)
Exit at 53rd Street.
Turn left at the first light (onto S. Hyde Park Blvd.).
Turn right at the first light (onto 55th St.).
Proceed W on 55th, under the railroad overpass, past the first light (Lake
Park), around the apartments in the center, and turn left at the next light
(onto Woodlawn Ave.)
Turn right at the first light (onto 57th St.).
Go 1-1/2 blocks. Anatomy Building (1027 E. 57th) is on your left, just past the
stop sign at the pedestrian crossing. Regenstein Library is on your right at
this point.
The following map does not show all cross streets, but does show all intersections
with traffic lights.
From Dan Ryan Expressway:
(South Side and suburbs,
Indiana)
From I-90/94: Exit at 55th Street. (Garfield Blvd.) and turn east (turn left if
you are coming from the north; turn right if you are coming from the south).
Travel east on Garfield Blvd. about one-half mile to Washington Park.As you
enter the park, keep to the right. After you pass the turn-off to 55th Street, take
the next left onto 57th Street [This can be confusing. There's an opportunity
to take a very sharp left, which leads you to a museum in the park. This is not
what you want. 57th Street has a traffic signal at the next cross street
(Cottage Grove), which is visible from where you turn.]. Anatomy Building (1027
E. 57th) is on your right, 1/2 block after Ellis Ave. and just before the stop
sign at the pedestrian crossing. Regenstein Library is on your left at this
point.
From Chicago Skyway or Stony Island:
(Northwest Indiana, Southwest Michigan)
From I-90/Chicago Skyway: Exit at Stony Island Avenue. Follow Stony Island
north until it ends at 56th Street. Turn left, go under the railroad overpass, and
then immediately turn left (onto Lake Park). Take the next right (onto 57th
Street). Go 1-1/2 blocks past the traffic light (on Woodlawn Ave). Anatomy
Building (1027 E. 57th) is on your left, just past the stop sign at the
pedestrian crossing. Regenstein Library is on your right at this point.
PARKING ON CAMPUS:
On weekdays when classes are in session,
free parking on the street can be difficult. Drive around; eventually you'll
find something. After 3:00-3:30 PM on weekdays, the campus parking lots are
often open without requiring a keycard or payment. To get to the lot most
convenient to Anatomy, go west on 57th from the Anatomy Building, take the
first right (onto Ellis), and proceed past 56th and almost to the
next light on 55th. Paid visitor parking is available on the first floor of the
large brown brick building to your right (solid blue rectangle on map). You'll see the lot entry on your left
between 56th and 55th. If you are truly desperate, the Medical Center has
parking at a price. To reach it from Anatomy, go west on 57th from the Anatomy
Building, take the first left (onto Ellis), take the first available right
(onto 59th), and take the next available right (between the parking structure
and the medical center. On weekends, the parking lots are open/free and street
parking is typically not a problem unless an (infrequent) special event is in
progress.
From O'Hare Airport :
CTA Train: The cheapest way to get
to Hyde Park is the CTA
train from O'Hare
to the Loop , which operates 24 hours. The fare is about $2 to downtown.
This is especially useful in traveling during rush hours or when traffic is
stalled during bad weather. Be advised that as of 1 April 2006 a major expressway is undergoing
reconstruction, and as of this writing the impact on road transportation is
unknown. To catch the
train, follow the signs in the airport to the terminal, which is one floor
below the baggage claim area adjacent to the parking garage. The train takes
about 55 minutes to reach the Loop. Disembark at the Washington station (Lake
is the previous station). Come up to street level. [If you don't like stairs,
escalators are available: When you get off the train, walk opposite the
direction the train is going and go up the escalator. Exit the turnstile, and
then go down the long hall to your right . You'll eventually reach an escalator
after the Red Line CTA station.] Take a cab to the Anatomy Building; refer to
the "From Southbound Lake Drive" directions/map above. Cabfare should
be around $20.
Be advised that as of 1 April 2006 a major expressway is undergoing
reconstruction, and as of this writing the impact on all of the following,
which involve road transportation, is unknown.
The Omega Airport Shuttle ((773) 483-6634) runs an airport van according to

Domestic Terminal to the nearest underground Pedestrian Walkway. Proceed to
Elevator Centers 3 or 4 and press the Bus/Shuttle Center button. The shuttle
stops at Door E of the International Terminal (Terminal 5) 5 minutes after the
scheduled departure from the Bus/Shuttle Center.

*6:45 AM / 7:45 AM / 9:45 PM / 10:45 PM / 11:45 PM buses go to Midway /
South Side
Travel time is approximately 1 hour.
1-773-483-OMEGA (6634) - (press 0 for operator)
8751 S. Greenwood Suite 110
Chicago, IL 60619
The shuttles are often (but not always) white converted vans with
"Omega Airport Shuttle" in purple-and-yellow lettering. Fare is
$17.00, and you may disembark at the Ramada, the Del Prado at 53rd and Lake
Shore Drive, the Windermere at 1642 E. 56th Street, International House, or
across the street from Ida Noyes Hall (1212 E. 59th Street). On request, the
driver will also stop at the Quadrangle Club, which is 1/2 block east of the
Anatomy Building.
FYI, TO O'Hare the schedule is:

*6:45 AM, 7:45 AM, 10:45 PM, 11:45 PM buses go to Midway/Hyde Park.
Continental Air Transport [(773)
454-7800] runs buses to the Palmer House Hotel in the Loop downtown from 6:00
am to 11:30 pm, leaving every 5-10 minutes from across from the lower level
baggage claim areas in terminals 1, 2, and 3. The fare is $14.75 one way. To
get to Hyde Park from Palmer House, follow the "From Downtown"
directions below.
Limo Service: There are many, but we recommend
Quadrangle Limo (773-418-8228) because the responses when you tell them that
this site recommended them can sometimes be entertaining. When they bother to check it, their
email is quadlivery@hotmail.com. Be forewarned that sometimes their idea
of a limo is a Lincoln, but sometimes a minivan. Reserve in advance.
Assuming you have made a reservation, when you pick up your luggage,
note the nearest exit door and phone the above number. You will be picked up at the center
island opposite the door.
From Midway Airport : It
is probably simplest just to take a cab.
Ask the driver to take you to Hyde Park via 55th
Street/Garfield Blvd. Fare should
be around $15. Drivers will
sometimes object to this route and/or suggest going via the Stevenson
Expressway and I-55. This is a
longer route (with a higher fare) than 55th Street/Garfield Blvd but
sometimes is faster. If you are
desperate to take public transportation, the CTA #55 (Garfield) bus runs from
the airport east on 55th Street (= Garfield Blvd). Exit at Ellis or University Avenue.
