REAPPOINTMENT AS ASSISTANT PROFESSOR

General principles and perspective

We expect every assistant professor to succeed in our system.  We invest considerable effort and resources in identifying and recruiting the best junior faculty.  We have no quota for how many junior faculty can be promoted and/or tenured.  In our system, the first reappointment is an opportunity for a mid-course correction in the careers of junior faculty – and rarely a pretext for termination.  Departmental proposals for first reappointment are denied only when it is crystal clear that faculty cannot meet our standards despite any conceivable intervention.  Thus, during the past 10 years, no departmental request for first reappointment has been denied [although one would not want to be be the exception that tests this rule].

First reappointment as assistant professor is also the time at which "undifferentiated" assistant professors must declare a choice of track.  Reappointment review assesses the appropriateness of this choice and the feasibility of being promoted if the Research Scholar or Clinical Scholar tracks are declared.

In the Clinician-Educator track, in which promotion is not required, reappointment plays a different role:

>Reappointment is an opportunity to assess whether Clinician-Educators continue to be excellent in significant programs of clinical care and education-administration.

>For those Clinician-Educators for whom promotion is a career goal, reappointment is an opportunity to assess the adequacy of planning for career development and promotion.

Because much of reappointment is "about" preparation for promotion to associate professor, it may be productive to look ahead to this process by pointing to the PROMOTION TO ASSOCIATE PROFESOR pages and then returning to this page.
