WHAT IS C-A-E-S-A-R?

¥ C-A-E-S-A-R is a better way of representing the various activities we credit toward promotion in the misleadingly-named "Clinician-Educator" track.  The name and its abbreviation (C-E) misleadingly imply that clinical care delivery and education are the only legitimate activities in this track; this has long been untrue.

¥ C-A-E-S-A-R stands for 6 different domains in which faculty in this track can receive credit towards promotion:

Care of patients; veterinary activity; activity in the clinical laboratory

Administration

Education

Scholarship

Academic service to external communities

Related activities of an academic nature

¥ C-A-E-S-A-R stands for the concept that the sum total of a faculty member's internal impact and/or external recognition in one, some, or all of the 6 different domains is relevant towards promotion.  In principle, one could be promoted for internal impact and/or external recognition in any of the following : {C,A,E,S,A,R} {C,A,E,S,A} {C,A,E,S,R} {C,A,E,A,R} {C,A,S,A,R} {C,E,S,A,R} {A,E,S,A,R} {C,A,E,S} {C,A,E,A} {C,A,E,R} {C,A,S,A} {C,A,S,R} {C,A,A,R} {C,E,S,A} {C,E,S,R} {C,E,A,R} {C,S,A,R} {A,E,S,A} {A,E,S,R} {A,E,A,R} {A,S,A,R} {E,S,A,R} {C,A,E} {C,A,S} {C,A,A} {C,A,R} {C,E,S} {C,E,A} {C,E,R} {C,S,A} {C,S,R} {C,A,R} {A,E,S} {A,E,A} {A,E,R} {A,S,A} {A,S,R} {A,A,R} {E,S,A} {E,S,R} {E,A,R} {S,A,R} {C,A} {C,E} {C,S} {C,A} {C,R} {A,E} {A,S} {A,A} {A,R} {E,S} {E,A} {E,R} {S,A} {S,R} {A,R} {C} {A} {E} {S} {A} {R}

Shown are three of the many different ways in which diverse activities could add up to the same credit:

Thus, one could be a traditional "Clinician-Educator" and be promoted, but need not.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT C-A-E-S-A-R

Q: If "Clinician-Educator (C-E)" is a misleading name, why not change it?

A: A name change is under discussion.  The major challenge is consensus on a better name.

Q: Have other aspects of this track changed?

A: No.  Principal features of the track continue:

            (i) No public distinction of title.  That is, if you are an associate professor in this track, your title is "associate professor" just as it would be in any other BSD faculty track.

(ii) While we encourage progress towards promotion, promotion by a certain date (i.e., up-or-out) is not required in this track.

(iii) The heart of the track is still A-C-E:

That is, to qualify for reappointment at the same rank or promotion to a new rank, you need an excellent and significant program of (a) Education and/or Administration, and amost always (b) Clinical activity

(iv) Promotion to associate professor also requires internal impact and/or external recognition in one, some, or all of the C-A-E-S-A-R dimensions.  Promotion to full professor requires external recognition in one, some, or all of the C-A-E-S-A-R dimensions.

Q: If I dislike these requirements or any aspect of the BSD faculty tracks, what can I do about this?

A: Talk to your departmental chair.  The departmental chairs collectively can propose changes in the track system.

Q: If I do scholarship, shouldn't I be in the Research Scholar or Clinical Scholar track?

A: That would be up to you and your department chair, but not necessarily.  There is an S in C-A-E-S-A-R.  Some faculty in this track have major research programs, and some are Principal Investigators on NIH grants for example.  Faculty presently in this track can be promoted and/or tenured on the basis of scholarship.  The major difference between this track and RS/CS is that the latter involve a long-term commitment of protected time and resources and in turn involve a stringent up-or-out screening mainly on the basis of scholarship.  Note that it is possible to begin a research program in this track and then switch to RS/CS if and when it becomes clear that the research program will be large, successful, and sustainable in the long term.

Q: What is academic service to external communities?

A: For example

External academic service that reflects positively upon the institution (e.g., scholarly editorial leadership of a major journal, scholarly service as a leader of a professional society or board; not just performance of a service or staff function)

Outreach to the local and or regional community of patients, in which an academic perspective enhances health care delivery

Advocacy of academically-informed policy on the local, regional, national, and/or international scales

Q: What are related activities of an academic nature?

A: Any academic activity that enhances our stature as an academic medical center, where academic pertains to the application, transmission, and/or creation of knowledge.  We cannot anticipate all of the ways in which a BSD faculty member could contribute, and so do not wish to restrict recognition through an exclusive list.

Q: Do the e-forms reflect C-A-E-S-A-R?

A: Draft e-forms that do so will be available soon.  When they are, please first consult with your Chair about whether you should be using the old or the new e-forms.

Q: What if my department chair, Section Chief, mentors, and/or colleagues are confused about the present requirements or appear to be giving outdated advice based on past requirements no longer relevant?

A: While we strive to educate all faculty and those who support their career development about changes in tracks and their criteria, sometimes some people may be confused.   It is possible to receive advice that is contradictory to the stated requirements.  If this occurs, it is to your advantage to verify that the advice you are receiving is correct or incorrect.   To do so, you may refer your source to this website, to the Office of Academic Affairs, or to the Faculty Dean of Academic Affairs.
